Background
Who, or what, you may ask, is Mini Moni? Mini Moni is a popular music group in Japan specializing in cutesie, happy-go-lucky tunes. While their target group is young girls, people of many ages, including those outside of Japan, are finding themselves fans (myself included).
Mini Moni sprung from the mind of Morning Musume member Mari Yaguchi. The idea was to form a subgroup of short members, about 5 feet and under (and possibly why the group is called "Mini" Moni). The chosen members; Ai Kago, Nozomi Tsuji, Mari herself, and Hawaiian-born Mika Todd from the subgroup Coconuts Musume, made their debut in January of 2001. In 2003 Mari left the group due to personal preferences, and was quickly replaced with another Morning Musume member, Ai Takahashi. Mika took over as leader and things moved on from there.
In April of 2004 it was announced that Mika was dropping out of Mini Moni to pursue her dreams in Los Angeles, CA and return to the states. Mini Moni was put on hiatus. Tsuji and Kago, due to their graduating from Morning Musume in the summer of 2004 to form their own group [W], dampened any more hopes that the group might resurface - or at least, with any "old skool" present.
What They've Done
You can find all kinds of Mini Moni merchandise; from bikes to underwear to costumes to cups. They also have a number of photobooks out.
In late 2002 Mini Moni ja Movie debuted in theaters. It's main purpose was to "explain" why Mari left the group, and introduced Ai into the group.
Amoung other things, they even have their own segment on the Morning Musume show Hello! Morning, where they dress as cute or crazy characters and perform silly skits.
Mini Moni's Brementown Musicians is a recent project in which the members partake in a drama series. Ai Takahashi plays Chiyono, a girl whose family moves into a haunted mansion. It's bad enough people at school pick on her and call her Donkey, she's got a harmonica playing ghost (and a nosey classmate very interested in the ghost and the mansion) to deal with!
